In this tensed and hectic working environment, we see the most heartwarming scenery in the world.

On May 28, in a corner of the pandemic treatment section in Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, a heartwarming photograph captured the beauty of humanity. In the picture, a nurse took time from her busy routine to feed a young child who was one of the confirmed cases. This picture has been widely circulated in the press.

From the facebook account of Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, a caption reads, “In this tensed and hectic working environment, we see the most heartwarming scenery in the world.”

This young patient in the picture and her grandmother were admitted together. Her grandmother took care of her at home. They came to the hospital because of Covid-19 infection. At the hospital, they stayed at the same room. A few days later, this young patient reached the safety condition to leave quarantine. She was ready to go home finally.

Sadly, on the other hand, her grandmother showed symptoms of “happy” hypoxia, or silent hypoxemia. Therefore, endotracheal intubation was called for. This nurse in the picture was concerned that the intubation treatment might scare this young patient who was only a year old. Her mother was still on the way to pick her up. So, the nurse quickly took her out of the room to the nurse station.

While waiting for her mother to arrive, this young patient said she was hungry. The nurse found formula powder and feeding bottle in the bag of her personal belongs. However, this nurse was young and had no experience in preparing formula or feeding baby. The head nurse was consulted. Yet, the head nurse also had no experience. Two of them with no experience studied relevant tips for a while and successfully prepared formula with warm water. Next question was how to feed a baby.

They uphold Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s teaching, “Be mindful is to be professional.” They protect this baby from being scared and hungry. Indeed, this is the spirit of caring for patients as they will for their loved ones. Though they had no experience in babysitting, they became loving babysitter, feeding and calming calm this young patient. This picture captured the loving and touching moment.

Confirm cases of Covid-19 exploded in Taiwan recently. One of the pandemic hot zone is New Taipei City where Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital is located. As confirmed cases increased, hospitals are very busy caring for influx of patients and stepping up the infectious controls for the increased risk of this new infectious disease. Stress for medical personnel is also at a very high level. They face the dangerous virus. Their body and mind are both very stressed. However, they uphold their commitment and their original aspiration to save lives when entering the medical care profession. These medical personnel are dedicated to rescue and safeguard life and love.
