Nepal is a country nestling below the majestic Himalaya Mountains; it is also the birthplace of Shakyamuni Buddha 2,500 years ago. On April 25 a year ago, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 devastated the country, caused thousands of deaths and destroyed over 800,000 buildings. On hearing the news, the Tzu Chi Foundation immediately began preparing relief materials; within two days, on April 27, the first Tzu Chi Disaster Relief and Medical Team departed for Nepal. During the first period of emergency relief, a total of 10 teams of volunteers arrived in the country. They provided and distributed hot meals, organized free medical clinics and gave comfort and psychological support to the survivors. Later, the period of mid- and long-term relief work started. Tzu Chi planned to reconstruct schools and hospitals and repair a temple. At the same time, Tzu Chi volunteers from other countries and regions accompanied local volunteers in doing charity work. Inspired by Buddha’s teaching that all men are equal, Nepali volunteers are shouldering the responsibility of bringing goodness to those people in need. It has been a year since the earthquake stuck. Nepali volunteers continue to conduct monthly visits, organize free clinics and build temporary classrooms for children so that they can continue their studies. The Great Love which Tzu Chi brought has spread in the country. |
