Master Cheng Yen is the most trusted person in Taiwan, according to a survey conducted by the Readers Digest magazine.

The Chinese-language issue of the magazine said that she finished 22 percentage points above the person in second place, Li Chang-yu, a world-famous forensic scientist. Third was international film director Ang Lee and fourth Cardinal Paul Shan Kuo-hsi.

The magazine said that readers selected the founder of Tzu Chi, because its volunteers arrived first at the scene of natural disasters and delivered relief more efficiently than agencies of the government. They also brought help to parts of the world far from Taiwan, such as poor countries in Africa and South America. All these activities had left a deep impression in the heart of Taiwan people, it said.

The survey also found that the most trusted profession was firefighter, followed by judges, nurses, doctors, teachers and meteorologists.
